And the Beat Goes On

“Red Shoes” was inspired by my favorite Kate Bush song, which is an adapted version of the fairy tale by the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. In the story, a girl dreams of becoming a great dancer, only to put on enchanted red shoes that won’t stop dancing and that she can’t take off.
The story resonates with me and speaks to the strain and struggle of the pursuit of excellence and perfection in the arts. It makes me think of how we can be driven to pursue its beauty even to our own detriment.
I have begun combining my love for architectural salvage and passion for oil painting. In this piece, the blackened and battered old window frame enhances the worn out quality of the red dance shoes and becomes the entry point into a frayed place with the objects made more lovely by use and hard work.
