Artist Statement
“Pershing Square” illustrates to the viewer the plight of the homeless population in our cities. Using original photos by street photographer Bree Akesson, which I turned into transfers, this piece shows a well dressed man walking through the middle of Pershing Square completely oblivious to the plight of the homeless, sleeping man on the park bench in the bottom left corner of this painting. I feel it is important to recognize the casual disregard for our less fortunate human counterparts, the homeless.
This piece is 20” X 14” and was created using encaustic, melted, pigmented wax, in a manner suited to this medium. Denser layers of wax help blur and push back in space certain images while thinner applications help clarify and accentuate what I feel needs importance. Inscribed, colored lines are swirling around the figures to intensify the scrambled emotions that seem to surround the situation, ignorance, oblivion and disregard from both beings, the more well off and the discarded alike.
