“Something Echoes,”is from a series of drawings in which I explore memory and its’ influence in defining a moment. In this drawing, multiple views of the figure in various gestural and implied psychological states are presented together in a single image.
The resulting visual paradox of harmony and disarray, calm and chaotic, beauty and obscenity hopefully reminds my viewer of an experience with a dualistic reality. It is from this space, or memory- that I hope they might ultimately draw as they attempt to define the elusive nature of the figure presented in the image.
I try to further evoke the sense of tension between past and present by utilizing a variety of staining and scraping methods that serve to animate the surface while simultaneously infusing the work with the nostalgic warmth of old sepia photographs. To me, this multifaceted view of a moment and the role of memory depicts both its potential and uncertainty.
