Looking to capture the intimate, direct experience of being in this tight canyon that is only reached from the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, while appreciating the extra effort needed to reach this special place, I chose to print this image with an intaglio process that predates most paper photography. While the photo-sensitive material on the steel printing plate is modern, the labor intense process is the same as it was in 1869 when Powell first explored the canyon.
Our boats had to be tied to the rocks at the top of a large rapid. We waded through waist-deep water to start out journey up Matkatamiba. The canyon continued to get smaller and smaller acting as a natural gateway to the world we were trying to explore.
