Art Contests Accepted Artists
Dallas, Texas USA
My art is influenced by the Eastern philosophy of the unity of opposites. I seek to work in the realms between chaos and order, heaviness and lightness, addition and subtraction. In addition, I am deeply in love with the tactile quality of art materials and increasingly find that I want to spend meditative amounts of time methodically adding and subtracting surface layers. For this piece in particular, I was inspired by ideas of safe, womb-like environments, specifically the physical and emotional environments we each create, or are created for us, with the purpose of protecting ourselves.
I begin with a wood, cradled panel I construct myself. Using a scroll saw, I cut out organic shapes from the surface of the panel, creating voids that I then have to reincorporate back into the piece. I make concave structures from wire which nest into these cut shapes, and I cover this wire skeleton in paper and acrylic mediums to increase the stability of these recessed areas. I continue by adding layers of material, such as acrylic mediums and pastes, which are often mixed with organic materials such as sand and dirt. I then oscillate between the process of addition and building surface with subtraction by using wood cut tools to carve away parts of the panel’s surface. This gentle dance between addition and subtraction may continue for days, weeks or even months, and at some point during this push / pull process, I’ll begin to add color into the additive/subtractive process.
