Artist Statement
Through bold and experimental mark-making an image that borders on representation and abstraction unfolds. A mysterious space that references nature and the psychological state of the maker surfaces. It is the magnetism of expansiveness that pulls the viewer in, rather than an inviting warmth. The place, a pond, lays before an ominous, yet intriguing horizon, much like the anxiety and excitement of encountering the unknown.
Using oil on canvas and economy of mark, this piece is stitched together with few layers and brushstrokes. Everything has purpose and is necessary; it is about both restraint and expressiveness. Working on a completely flat surface, the brushstrokes achieve a heavy, more somber, presence.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
