I must explain how differentiating my recent dedication to abstract painting is compared to my long career as a designer of man-made structures. I am a professional structural engineer. Given this about me: it has been a life-changing experience to be able to freely express myself on a canvass with my choice of colors and shapes that my mind is now (shortly after engaging in abstract art) showing me. I am partially color blind which in the daily physical world is a little confusing, but on the canvass; who cares? In the structural-physical world I was bound by the properties of the available building materials. Now I have no such restrictions with my new building material, acrylic paint.
So, I was thrilled when my art piece “Hollow Tree” that I submitted to the Likeness Exhibition, was selected along with 11 other talented artists who were also were winners in this exhibition category. Personally, this is a certain measure of achievement in terms of a personal journey I took; from the specific physical world to the abstract art world. I have become convinced that consciousness doesn’t know or care what is real. To me this is breakthrough in my belief system.
The personal evolution that took place as a consequence of this journey has enabled me to create images of abstract forms and colors originating in my thoughts followed by my desire to project these thought-images by placing acrylic paint on canvass. In the case of my creation of “Hollow Tree” I started with no intention of ending up with the piece that it became. I did pre-select the colors and had the thought of painting a piece that would have a likeness to nature. After three or four layers, the tree emerged very clearly. Almost as if it was in my original thought at the time I hung the canvass. Epiphany? Perhaps. Random? Probably not.
