I captured this image on a late Autumn evening that was cold and clear in downtown Dubuque, Iowa. The Canfield is a historic old hotel dating back to 1891. It was originally called “The Paris.” A huge fire destroyed at least 4 of the original floors in 1946 and killed 19 including the wife of the owner. Today it’s just a down-at-the-heels hotel featuring rooms with eclectic furniture and a lounge that has karaoke one night a week. For this photo I wanted to capture the nostalgia of the old neon and the light it cast into the upstairs rooms.
This image was shot with a Nikon D70, handheld at ISO 200 for 1/13th second and f/3.5 with a Nikon 18-55mm lens at 28mm. Proving even a 9 year old 6 Megapixel digital camera and a kit lens can make a great photo.
I love exploring light and how it is interpreted by a camera. I began taking photos in the mid – 1970’s with a fixed lens Yashica camera my father gave me. In college I developed a love for black and white photography and the sweeping landscapes of the American Southwest. Working for newspapers after college helped hone my skills in portraiture and documentary photography. I get much of my inspiration from my frequent travels. My favorite genres are landscape, portraiture, musical performance and Americana.
