Open Art Calls Accepted Artists
Pok is 1 of 5 large scale charcoal artworks created during an artist residency in Karsamaki, Finland. They are a sum of my experiences as an artist in a foreign land, adjusting to the local climate and culture.
Discovered as a shape from blemish on studio bench in Pappila on 2nd March 2016, 16:57, Pok was one of the first thumbnail shapes that was worked on and replicated in a larger scale. I was just getting accustomed to being wrapped in multiple layers before heading outdoors and experiencing goosebumps indoors. This period of adjustment to Karsamaki’s sub zero temperatures lent its influences to Pok’s body structure and texture.
In this body of work, I attempted creation by focusing solely on the process. It begins with drawing shapes found in the surroundings and subsequently adding on features such as eyes, feet and texture etc. to the shape to create an imaginary creature. Application of this consistent procedure to all shapes leads to the “discovery” of creatures that are otherwise just random shapes overlooked. The decision making in this additive process takes the form of an internal Q and A monologue and is largely influenced by the strange and new environment that I was living in.
